Twenty years ago today, Animals Asia founder Jill Robinson joined a scenic bus tour that would turn her life around – and lead to greater understanding of animal welfare in China and Vietnam. Jill was working undercover in southern China to investigate an unsettling report – that the bus stopped at a farm selling medicinal bear bile that was extracted from bears crammed into tiny cages.
Following news that two moon bears cubs had been confiscated in Lai Chau Province in northern Vietnam, an Animals Asia team made the 450km trip from Hanoi arriving late at night. The next morning they met with the Forestry Protection Department to arrange the handover of the two cubs.
Animals Asia has welcomed the news that bear bile farmer Guizhentang has put its application for a stock market launch on hold, calling it: “a welcome victory for the campaign to end bear bile farming”.
Academics responsible for training China’s vets are being armed with the latest technologies and techniques at an educational workshop held this week at China’s Nanjing Agricultural University.
